defending the dark

This post from Richard Beck’s Blog on Halloween is interesting. Check it out.

In Defense of Halloween:
Psychological and Theological Musings

I tend to agree with Dr. Beck, although Halloween is probably my least favorite holiday. Mostly it’s just something to pass the time until the real holidays get here in November and December.

I’m going to call you out on this one, Adam. In the past, at least, you’ve had a real problem with anything that portrays the dark side of life, specifically the demonic, lightly. What are you thinking now? How would you respond to Dr. Beck’s comments?

BTW–Marla was Dr. Beck’s GA during her grad work, and she remains very impressed with him.

I would say that I don’t think Dr. Beck is advocating a “light treatment” of anything, certainly not the demonic. Dealing with the darker realities of this world is a step in the right direction. Too often we ignore or (worse) deny our fears.

What I got from Dr. Beck’s post was that it does us good to face our fears, to make monsters out of them and then deal with them in some sense. (Interestly, Stephen King articulates the same thought in his book On Writing.)
