Brotherhood of the WolfA small French village is being terrorized by what the people simply call “the beast.” A biologist sent by the king believes it may be a wolf, but quickly learns that the beast’s victims could not have been attacked and bitten by any normal wolf. The plot twists and turns—there is considerably more happening than an animal out of control.

This is the setting for Brotherhood of the Wolf, a French film that is part period piece, part suspense, part horror and part action. The fight scenes are a wonderful mix of grace and raw power, filmed using techniques that reminded me of The Matrix.

What I love about this film is that it is an action movie, but it simply does not follow the typical action movie formula. In the end, each character’s motive is a complex, multi-sided thing. Good and bad are not clearly defined. There is an awful lot of gray.

An added plus is that the dubbing, should you choose to watch the film in English, is the best I’ve ever heard. All around, a solid film, and my pick for number 3.
